There will not be an Opera browser for the iPhone because it Apple says it competes with its own browser Safari.
The NY Times profiles Opera Software, the company that distributes the Opera browser for multiple platforms. According to the article, however, Apple is not allowing an iPhone version of the browser into the App Store:
Mr. von Tetzchner said that Opera’s engineers have developed a version of Opera Mini that can run on an Apple iPhone, but Apple won’t let the company release it because it competes with Apple’s own Safari browser.
Although this isn’t a huge concern for most iPhoners. Unless there are some features that Safari can’t accomplish. It still kinda erk’s some users, as it shows a very anti-competetive Apple.
If you remember Podcaster, which was denied/rejected on the same basis; that it was competing with Apples own featture/application. Even though the feature wasn’t even on the iPhone at the time. Apple then proceeds to released a beta firmware, just recently that includes the same functions and features as Podcaster.
I’m sure I share the same opinion with others. If you want the iPhone to continue to be a very competitive handset for the celluar industry, don’t continue the anti-competitive actions. We want applications that allow us to use our iPhone more and more everyday!
