Canalys released some numbers on Thursday deatiling shipments and market shares of smartphones worldwide. The information was actually a table listing each smartphone vendor, total shipments and market share percentages of Q3 2007 and 2008.
As expected, Nokia came out on top with 15,485,690 shipments in 2008 for Q3. Apple shows 6,899,010 shipments in Q3 2008, up from 1,107,460 in 2007 Q3. RIM’s stumbles short behind Apple for a total of 6,051,730 in Q3 2008.
The huge surge of shipments in Q3 2008 for Apple can atribbuted to the release of the iPhone 3G. Specifically because unlike Apples first launch of the iPhone 2G, which only launched in the United States under the cellular network AT&T. The iPhone 3G launch occured in over 22 countries on July 11th 2008. Which help tremendously to gain better market share and beat out RIM in their Q3 shipments.
