Stream Your iTunes Library Across The Internet

At work or internet cafe and want to access your iTunes but didn’t copy them to your laptop or perhaps you don’t keep your main iTunes Library on your laptop but rather your desktop.
Don’t fret, because you can actually “mount” or “stream” your iTunes Library from your home to your laptop. How? Well with SSH of course. Now readers beware, this isn’t something that can be done easily. It’s rather in-depth and not for the those of us that don’t like the console or rather for those people that can’t imagine typing instead of point and clicking to make something work.
Aron Trimble from the TUAW blog has a nice article up that tells you how to proceed with getting access to your iTunes Library remotely.
How to stream your iTunes library across the web for free
The concept is rather simple, using a SSH tunnel to mount a shared remote iTunes Library.
Mac OS X users and faithful readers of TUAW know that there is great power found in the command-line, but one of the greatest advantages of OS X’s UNIX heritage is the secure shell (SSH) client and server. From the Apple Matters article on SSH tunnels for the common man: “SSH is a network protocol that provides secure communication between two computers.” Its power comes from the ability to create an encrypted tunnel through which a client can send many types of internet traffic.
I haven’t had a chance to try this out, but if you have and had some success or failures, then please give some feedback in the comments section for all the readers that may attempt this little maneuver.
Happy iTune Streaming!
